BAAA completed its inaugural lacrosse season in spring of 2011. We had an outstanding first year with a total 127 players, 74 boys and 53 girls. We had four boys teams: U9, U11, U13, and U15 and three girls teams: U9, U11, and U13. The first season of lacrosse was a great success introducing lacrosse to many Boonsboro area youth that have not played lacrosse before and allowing the players that had been travelling to other areas to stay in Boonsboro and wear a Warriors jersey for lacrosse. We also sent four 8th graders from the boys U15 team to the league All Star game.
Lacrosse is the official team sport of Maryland and has been popular in the Baltimore and Annapolis areas. The popularity of lacrosse has grown greatly over the past few years and is considered to be the fastest growing team sport in the country. Many Boonsboro area youth were travelling to
nearby areas in order to play lacrosse, the BAAA Board decided to conduct a survey to see if there was enough interest in the Boonsboro area to support a lacrosse program. The response to the survey was overwhelmingly positive showing a huge interest in lacrosse in the area. Based on the interest BAAA moved forward with organizing a lacrosse program.
BAAA lacrosse participated in the Western Maryland Youth Lacrosse Conference (WMYLC). Many of the teams we are familiar with from football such as Middletown, Walkersville, and Brunswick also have teams in the lacrosse league. There are also teams from Smithsburg, Hagerstown, and Chambersburg that are new to Boonsboro. It was nice to extend some of our rivalries to the spring and to start some new ones.
I would like to thank all of the players and parents, the BAAA Board, the lacrosse coaches, and the town of Boonsboro for their support and assistance in making the first year for BAAA lacrosse a success. I am looking forward to our first indoor lacrosse season this winter and then to our second
season in the spring.
We are always looking for people willing to help with our lacrosse and other programs. Please feel free to contact me if are interesting in helping with a BAAA program or if you have any questions or comments about the 2011 lacrosse season or the upcoming winter indoor or 2012 lacrosse season.
